The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) must be achieved collectively, and implemented by both industrialized and developing countries. The United Nations has set up a monitoring and assessment system to match this ambition: universal and regular, it is also transparent and results-oriented. It combines a solid statistical system for assessing countries’ progress and the road still ahead, with an accountability mechanism that encourages countries to carry out assessments and annual reviews of implementation in a dedicated forum.
Indicators for monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals
To track global progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of 232 indicators was adopted on March 11, 2017 by the UN Statistical Commission. These indicators, as defined at that time, are intended to serve as the primary basis for tracking global progress toward the SDGs.
International monitoring mechanism : High-level political forums
The High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) for Sustainable Development is the United Nations forum for global monitoring of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
